VanderbiltUniversityBoardofTrustduringajointmeetingoftheir
AcademicProgramsandStudentLifeCommittees.Overlunch,
morethan20Trusteeslearnedabouttheprogramsandservicesof
theCenterandexploredstrategicissuesimpactingtheteachingand
learningla
ndscapeoftheUn
iversity.Usingtheflexiblespaceofour
experimentalclassroom,theydiscussedinsmallgroupsthe
undergraduateteacherswhohadimpactedthem,andthen
collaboratedtoidentifycharacteristicsofexcellentteaching,listing

SUSTAINABILITYACROSSTHECURRICULUM
Inaglobalizingworldoflimitedresources,collegesanduniversities
playavitalroleinpreparingstudentstomeetthesustainability
challengesofthefuture.Thedimensionsofsustainabilitypointnot
onlytonewcoursecontent,butalsotonewwaysofteachingthat
content.Thus,thisyear,theCenterlaunchedasetofiniti
atives
on
sustainabilityandthecurriculum.Throughvariousdiscussionsand
workshops,adiversegroupoffacultyandgraduatestudentshave
cometogethertoshareperspectivesfromacrossthedisciplines.At
ourGradSTEPconferenceinJanuary,GraduateTeachingFellowJohn
Morrellhostedapanelcalled“TowardanEcologicalPedagogy”
whichconside
redtheplaceofenvironment
alismintheclassroom
andtheimplicationsofecologyforinterdisciplinarity.InMarch,
Johnexpandedontheseeffortsbycoordinatingafacultypanel(see
photosbelow)on“SustainabilityAcrosstheCurriculum”that
exploredtherolescollegesanduniversities—particularlythrough
theircurricula—canplayinaddressingtheseissu
es.Asafollowup

andprofessionalstudentsandpostdocsfromacrosscampusjoinedmembersoftheCenterforTeachingstaffforanarrayof
workshops,lunchtimeconversations,andasocialgathering.
100studentsfrom33departmentsrepresentingsixofVanderbilt’sschoolsattendedthisonedayconference.Ofthose,39%were
fromSTEM(Science,Technology,Engineering,&Math)disciplines,thesocialsciencesmadeup22%,and38%representedthe
humanities—asignificantincreasefromlastyear’s11%.
